Scottish Independence Debate

Scottish flag

September 18th, Thursday, 7:30pm

This Thursday (Friday morning in China) may go down in British history as the day that Scotland became an independent country.

To mark the occasion the British Chamber of Commerce in China will be holding a fun and interesting debate on which vote would be best for the Scottish people; “yes” or “no” to independence.

If you would like to be involved in the debate please send us an email: info@britchamswchina.org

Our 2 speakers representing the “yes” and “no” arguments will be David Bryce from Blackridge in West Lothian, Scotland and Graham Bannerman from Dundee, Tayside, Scotland.

Join us to be part of the debate on a subject that will send tremors around the world and monumentally change the shape literally and metaphorically of Great Britain.

This will provide an opportunity to understand more about a hotly debated topic that has split the country in two. The audience will be invited to participate in the debate, so come and join the fun, regardless of your country or background. This is a topic that everyone can relate to in some way.

Debate will be held in English.

100rmb entry fee (including a drink and Scottish snacks)

When East Berlin reporter Monika Maron published her debut novel “Flight of Ashes” (“Flugasche”) on environmental destruction in East Germany in 1981 in the West, she came under intense pressure and temporarily had to move to Hamburg. Many of her novels deal with people in the GDR or during the reunification period, people who rebelled against societal pressure to conform.

Maron was born in 1941 in Berlin and grew up in the GDR, and she has published a large number of novels, amongst them “Flight of Ashes” and “Animal Triste”, which has been recently translated into Chinese.

In the Bookworm the talk will focus on the role that cities and industrial corporations play dealing with environmental questions – both in Germany and China.

The event will be moderated by Prof. Lu Hongyan. Prof. Lu is the Director of the Environmental Education Center and founder of the successful Sichuan University Environmental Volunteer Association (EVA), which won the “Earth Award” by the China Environmental Journalists Association and Friends of the Earth Hong Kong.
