Standup Comedy Open Mic – hosted by Rob Brien


Standup Comedy Open Mic – for amateur comedians – will take place every 2nd Thursday of the month at 8pm at The Bookworm.  Anybody who performs on stage gets 2 free beers! Hosted by Rob Brien.

Rob Brien originally from Ireland has been living in Chengdu for eight years, two years ago an irrepressible desire for live comedy, led to him performing Chengdu’s first ever stand up routine. Since then he has become resident MC for all things comedy in the ‘du. Rob has opened for Des Bishop, Turner Sparks, Drew Fralick, Joe Schaefer and Andy Curtain.

As well as Chengdu’s Kung Fu Komedy nights, Rob hosts the stand up open mic night on the 2nd Thursday of the month at The Bookworm. See him in action at

Saturday Storytelling for children

From Saturday, May 10th, we bring back our regular storytelling meetings on Saturdays mornings held by native English speakers. Aimed at children speaking English as 2nd language.




Two sessions per 55 minutes:
10 – 10.55 am, for 4-6 year-olds
11.05 – 12 pm, for 7-10 year-olds

Meetings schedule for Spring season 2014:

May: 10th, 17th, 24th, 31th
June: 7th, 14th, 21th

“How to cook your life” in conversation with Doris Dörrie


Doris Dörrie is one of Germany’s most successful film directors. Besides her work as a director she publishes short stories and narratives. After finishing her studies at the University of Film and Television Munich (HFF) in 1978, Dörrie worked as a freelance director for various television stations. In 1985 her comedy “Männer” was released, and it gained her not only national, but also international recognition. She received the German Film Award for the best screenplay. In 1995 Dörrie received the Filmband in Silber for her movie „Keiner liebt mich”. Since 1997 Doris Dörrie is Professor of applied dramaturgy and story development at the University of Television and Film in Munich. Doris Dörrie is living with her daughter Carla in Munich.

April 26th, Saturday at 8pm, Bookworm will host the second kick of Kung Fu Komedy show this season. Standup comedian – Andy Curtain, special guest – Chris Baker. Lots of fun guaranteed!

Born in Melbourne, Andy moved to Shanghai in 2009 chasing the modern Australian dream of not living in Australia.

After a year of fapping about, he founded Kung Fu Komedy, now China’s one and only full-time comedy club.

Over the last 2 years he’s toured through 8 cities in China, along with gigs in HK, Melbourne, Seoul and the US. In touring through the mainland he opened for Des Bishop, Jimmy Shubert, Ruben Paul, Paul Ogata, Joe Klocek and Butch Bradley.

Chris Baker founded Stand Up Vietnam, and he is one of the top headlining acts in South-East Asia.

Film Title: Ma Xiaobing’s Summer (马小兵的夏天)

Length: 72 minutes

Ma Xiaobing seeks to move his mother’s tomb to his father’s burial site so that they can re-unite in the Other World. But the Chinese urbanization makes this no easy task. In a city of constant change,  Xiaobing’s attempt to grasp on to something of meaningful permanence.

Director’s Bio: Zhong Chen first studied engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing and got a Bachelor in Mechanics. Then he turned to make indie films and went to Temple University in Philadelphia USA to study filmaking and received a MFA degree in 2003. He is now based in China. His film and video works have been exhibited in numerous international film festivals.
